This very handsome Treeing Walker Coonhound came to us from Redding through our Pet Partnership Program. Garth exemplifies the breed in all ways. He has boundless energy and will most likely get himself into trouble and be destructive if left to his own devices and not given a job. He thrives on large doses of exercise and should be given every opportunity to romp and run to his heart's content. He has an excellent sense of smell and once on a scent will pursue it tirelessly. He has great speed and endurance and is happiest when working. These hounds have been known to climb trees in pursuit of game so keep in mind this ability when deciding on how to house Garth.
If you are not familiar with the breed and are brave enough to consider a hound, do your homework and research this breed. They are not for everyone and they are certainly not suited for city or town living. And, although sometimes hunted in packs, this hunter should not go to a dog park. His predatory tendencies are too intense. Garth is very strong so fit him for a harness and enroll him in a dog training class right away. Then find a canine sport, or several, that will channel his considerable energy and keep him happy and content. A tired, contented hound is a good hound. Garth is gregarious, tolerant, and friendly.
